Middy's Racing
What series do you compete in & how do Middy’s fit in?"I am in the Dunlop V8 support series which follows the main V8 supercars series around. I guess Middy’s think I’m ok as they are my main supporter and sponsor!"
What are your pre-race rituals?
"I have two balaclavas that I bring to the race tracks and if I’m not doing so well, I change my balaclava to my second one hoping for it to bring me luck and make me drive faster."
When travelling 250 km/hr what goes through your mind?
"I never really think about the speed; speed is just a number. I’m always focused on the upcoming corners and where I have to brake. We don’t actually have a speedometer in the car to know how fast we’re going. We sit very low in the car as well which makes you feel like you’re going slower than you actually are."
Common race day fears?
"I don’t have any fears although I do get nervous before a race as I always want to put in a solid performance."
What do you critique post-race to improve your own performance for next race?
"I look through the data and video footage of my driving and compare my performance against team mates and other drivers."
What would you like to achieve in the next 5-10 years of your career within V8 Supercar racing?
"For the next couple of years, I’d like to constantly improve in the development series and hopefully in my 4th year of the series have a crack at winning the championship. Like everyone else, my dream is to be picked up by a race team and get into a full time V8 Supercar drive, which is a hard job!"
How does racing overseas differ to Australian racing?
"The biggest difference is the comparison between the cars. You will notice this if you are watching events such as the British Touring Championship compared to V8 Supercar racing here in Australia. For example, a lot of front wheel drive cars race overseas whereas here in Australia, our cars are rear wheel drive like a typical Ford Falcon or Holden Commodore that you see driving around the streets."
What’s your favourite race circuit?
"That would be a tie between Bathurst and Phillip Island. I think Bathurst is an incredible track. The first lap I did there I drove very slowly, coming to the realisation that if I made a mistake I’d end up in the fence and have a really big crash."
How do you spend your time away from racing?
Currently I work full time for my race team MW Motorsport in Melbourne. I also train five days a week to keep my fitness up as a race care driver so I’m pretty busy.
Favourite holiday destination?
"Living away from home, my favourite holiday destination would be going back home to visit my friends and family who I really miss when I’m away. Living in Melbourne is so different to life in Darwin.'
The last movie you watched?
"Focus was the last movie. I found it to be quite a good movie to watch. I watched it on a plane because as you’d imagine, I do a lot of flying throughout the year!"
